A customer’s decision to buy from your machine often happens in the first 5 seconds. They glance at it, assess whether it looks functional and clean, and either approach or walk past. A machine with a bright, readable display and working selection buttons invites engagement. One with a dim, partially dead display and sticky buttons does not.
Functional Reliability
Beyond appearance, functional keypads and displays affect sales directly. If selection button “C3” doesn’t register, customers can’t buy that product. If the display doesn’t show the product price or selection, customers are less confident making a purchase.

Types of Vending Machine Displays
Vacuum Fluorescent Displays (VFDs)
Common in machines from the 1990s and 2000s. VFDs produce a distinctive blue-green glow. They’re reliable but not very bright in well-lit environments and can fade unevenly over time.
Signs of VFD aging:
- Segments don’t light (individual digit segments within the display go dark)
- Overall brightness is reduced compared to when the machine was new
- Display is dimmer than it should be even with contrast fully adjusted

Traditional Button Keypads

Is It the Button or the Controller?
If a button doesn’t register:
- Check for debris under or around the button that might prevent depression

- If the display shows the press but the machine doesn’t respond, the controller may not be processing the input correctly
Keypad Matrix Testing
Keypads use a matrix scanning system — rows and columns of conductors that identify which button position is being pressed. A failed row or column can knock out an entire range of buttons simultaneously.
If multiple buttons in a consistent pattern fail (all buttons in row A, all buttons with even numbers), this suggests a matrix row/column failure. This can be in the keypad itself or in the controller’s keypad interface.
Repairing vs. Replacing Keypads
Minor Repairs
Cleaning sticky or slow buttons: Remove the keypad overlay (usually secured by adhesive or small screws). Clean the button contacts and the contact area of the keypad board with isopropyl alcohol. Many “failed” buttons are simply dirty.
Individual button replacement: On some machines, individual button switches are through-hole components on the keypad circuit board. These can be desoldered and replaced. This requires basic soldering skill.
Contact restoration: Conductive pen (a pen with silver-filled conductive ink) can restore worn switch contacts on membrane keypads. Apply to the worn contact area, allow to dry, test.

FAQ: Vending Machine Keypads and Displays
My display shows partial information — only some digits or segments light up. What’s wrong? This is typically a failed VFD tube (if your machine uses VFD) or a damaged LCD segment. It can also indicate a loose or partially failed ribbon cable from the display to the controller. Check connections first; replace the display if connections are secure.
One specific product selection button never works. Is it always the button? Not always. Check: (1) Is the button physically sticking? (2) In diagnostic mode, does the button press register? If not, it’s the switch. (3) Does the product slot have an operational issue (motor failed) that makes it appear the button isn’t working? Test methodically.
