Vend motor and helix coil failures are among the most common repairs in snack vending machines. A failed motor means one slot earns nothing until fixed. A bent or broken coil means products either jam or don’t vend properly. The good news: both are straightforward repairs that most operators can handle themselves in 15–30 minutes per slot.

Understanding the Vend Mechanism
In a snack vending machine, each product column has:

Helix coil (also called a spiral coil or vend coil): A metal or plastic spiral that runs the length of the product column. Products sit on the coil, and when the coil rotates, the product at the front drops off the coil into the delivery chute.

Vend motor: An electric motor at the back of the coil that rotates the coil in response to a vend signal from the machine’s controller. The motor turns until the coil completes one full rotation, then stops.

Home switch: A small switch that tells the controller when the coil has completed one full rotation and should stop.
When a customer selects a product and payment is made:
- The controller signals the appropriate vend motor
- The motor rotates the coil one full turn
- The front product falls forward and down into the delivery chute
- The home switch signals that the rotation is complete
- The controller logs the successful vend
Diagnosing the Problem
Before replacing parts, confirm what’s actually failed.
Is the Motor Failing or the Coil?
Symptoms of a failed vend motor:
- Motor makes no sound when attempting to vend
- Motor hums but coil doesn’t rotate (motor running, coil seized or motor stripped)
- Motor turns part way and stops before completing a rotation
Symptoms of a damaged coil:
- Product getting stuck mid-coil (product jams)
- Product falling at the wrong time (not waiting for customer selection)
- Product not falling at all despite coil completing rotation (coil spacing too tight)
- Physical damage visible on the coil (bent sections, kinks)
Motor Self-Test
Enter the machine’s service/diagnostic mode. Most machines have a column test function that vends each column individually. Run the column test for the affected column:
- If the motor spins correctly in test mode: the motor is likely fine; the problem is a controller communication issue or a problem with the product being loaded
- If the motor doesn’t respond in test mode: power the motor test lead directly (see service manual for test procedure) to determine if the motor itself is failed vs. the controller signal
Voltage Test at Motor Terminals
With the machine in test mode attempting to vend the affected column, use a multimeter to check for voltage at the motor’s power terminals. If voltage is present (typically 12V or 24V depending on machine) but the motor doesn’t run, the motor is failed. If no voltage is present, the problem is upstream (controller, wiring, home switch).

- Phillips and flathead screwdrivers
- Nut driver or socket set (1/4” and 5/16” most common)
- Multimeter
- Replacement motor or helix coil (match to your machine model)
- Wire connectors or butt connectors (if splicing wires)
- Wire stripper (if needed)
Part Identification
Before ordering replacement parts, identify:
Machine brand and model: Usually on a label inside the machine door or on the rear of the cabinet.
Coil dimensions: Most vending machine coils are described by their pitch (the distance between coil turns, which determines product width capacity) and their depth (length of the column). Common sizes: 3/4” pitch, 1” pitch, 1.5” pitch, 2” pitch.
Motor type: DC motor or AC motor. Voltage (12V, 24V, 120VAC). RPM. The motor model is usually labeled on the motor body.
Common motor brands used in vending:
- Merkle-Korff (common in AMS and many other machines)
- Sielaff (common in European-origin machines)
- Generic replacements are widely available
Step 1: Power Off the Machine
Always power off before working on motors or wiring. Unplug the machine.
Step 2: Empty the Affected Column
Remove all products from the column you’re working on. This gives you access and prevents product damage during the repair.
Step 3: Remove the Tray/Shelf Assembly
Most snack machines have removable trays or shelf assemblies that slide out from the front or back. Pull the tray out to access the motor and coil from the rear.
The tray typically slides out on rails. Pull it forward until it stops, then lift the front slightly to clear the front stop. The entire tray assembly, including all columns on that row, comes out as a unit.
Step 4: Disconnect the Motor
With the tray out, you can access the motor at the rear of each column. The motor typically connects via:
- 2-wire power connector (pull apart)
- Spade terminals on the motor body (pull spade connectors off)
Disconnect the power wires from the motor. Note which wire is which (or photograph before disconnecting) to reconnect correctly.
Step 5: Remove the Coil
The coil is typically held by:
- The motor shaft at the rear (the coil slides onto the motor shaft or clips to it)
- A front coil anchor or front guide bracket at the front of the column
To remove:
- Disconnect the coil from the motor shaft (may clip or screw)
- Lift the front end of the coil out of the front guide bracket
- Slide the coil rearward and out of the column
If the coil is spring-tensioned, be careful — it may spring back slightly when disconnected.
Step 6: Remove the Motor (If Replacing Motor)
The motor attaches to the rear of the tray assembly, typically with 2 screws. Remove the screws and the motor comes free. Some motors are secured with a twist-lock mount — rotate counterclockwise to unlock.
Note the motor’s orientation before removal. Reinstall in the same orientation.
Step 7: Install Replacement Motor
Thread the new motor into position and secure with screws. Do not overtighten — you can crack the motor housing.
Reconnect the power wires in the correct orientation. For DC motors, polarity matters. If you reversed wires, the motor will rotate in the wrong direction, causing the coil to move backward instead of forward.
Testing motor direction: Before installing the coil, briefly power the motor (with machine on, use the column test function). Watch which direction the shaft turns. It should rotate in the direction that would advance product toward the front. If it spins the wrong direction, swap the two power wires.
Step 8: Install Replacement Coil
Thread the new coil:
- Insert the rear end of the coil onto the motor shaft (or clip to motor attachment)
- Route the coil along the column
- Secure the front end in the front guide bracket
Adjust the coil spacing: the coil turns should be evenly spaced, and the spacing should match the product width you intend to vend. Too tight and products will jam. Too loose and multiple products may fall at once.

Step 9: Reinstall the Tray Assembly
Slide the tray back into the machine on its rails. Make sure the rear of the tray clears any wiring before fully seating.
Step 10: Test
Power on the machine. Use the column test mode to test the repaired column:
- Does the motor turn?
- Does the coil advance one full rotation?
- Does the home switch stop the motor at the correct position?
- Does product fall correctly into the delivery chute?
Load 3–5 test products and run several test vends. Watch the entire vend cycle:
- Coil rotates smoothly
- Product slides to the front and drops
- No product hangs up mid-coil
Coil Adjustment Tips
If products are jamming after a coil replacement:
Too tight: Coil turns are too close together, pinching product. Use pliers to very slightly spread the coil turns in the jamming area.
Too loose: Multiple products fall at once. Compress the coil turns slightly in the affected area. Products should fit snugly in each coil “pocket” with just enough clearance to advance freely.
Uneven spacing: Use pliers to equalize spacing along the coil length.
Coil angled: The coil should run horizontally level through the column. If it’s angled, product at the front is higher or lower than the coil’s ideal drop point.
Home Switch Issues
If the motor keeps running past one full rotation or stops early, the home switch may be the problem. The home switch is a small micro-switch triggered by a cam on the motor or coil. It tells the controller the coil has completed one revolution.
Testing the home switch: With the machine in diagnostics and the switch exposed, manually trip the switch with your finger. The motor should stop when the switch is triggered.
If the switch is damaged or misaligned: Adjust the switch position or replace the switch. Home switches are inexpensive ($2–$8) and available from vending parts suppliers.
FAQ: Motor and Coil Replacement
How do I know what size replacement coil to order? Measure the column width, the product you’re vending, and count the coil turns on the original coil. Coils are specified by pitch (spacing between turns), diameter (to fit the column width), and length (to fill the column depth).
Can I use a different brand motor than the original? Yes, as long as the voltage, RPM, shaft size, and rotation direction match. Universal replacement motors are available. Verify the shaft diameter and length before ordering.
The motor turns but stops before a full rotation — what’s wrong? Check the home switch. The motor stops when the home switch is triggered. If the switch is triggered prematurely (by debris or misalignment), the motor stops early. Also check for a seized coil (coil rotation is difficult by hand).
How do I know which column number corresponds to which product in my machine? Enter the machine’s diagnostic/service mode. Most machines allow you to identify column numbers through the selection pad or a service menu. The column number should correspond to the product selector button number.
I replaced the motor but the coil still doesn’t turn — what now? Verify power is reaching the motor (voltage test at motor terminals). If power is present and the motor doesn’t run, the motor may be defective — test the replacement motor directly. If no power is reaching the motor, the issue is upstream: check the control board and wiring harness.
