What Is DEX?
DEX (Data Exchange) is a communication protocol defined by the National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA). It allows a vending machine’s controller to report standardized data to a connected device through a physical port on the machine.
DEX data typically includes:
- Total cash sales since last collection
- Total cashless sales
- Items sold by column/selection
- Items remaining in each column
- Machine status and error codes
- Timestamp data
This data is structured so that any DEX-compatible device can read it from any DEX-capable machine, regardless of manufacturer.
DEX vs. MDB
People often confuse DEX and MDB. They’re different things:
- MDB (Multi-Drop Bus): A communication bus that payment peripherals (coin mechs, bill validators, cashless readers) use to communicate with the machine controller
- DEX (Data Exchange): A data output protocol that the controller uses to share its data with external collection devices
A machine can have both, either, or neither. Most modern machines have both MDB for payment devices and DEX for data collection.
What a DEX Harness Is
A DEX harness is a cable assembly that connects the machine’s DEX port to a telemetry device or handheld data collector. The DEX port on most machines is a 9-pin DE-9 (DB-9) connector — the same type commonly used for serial port connections on older computers.
The harness typically has:
- A DE-9 female connector that plugs into the machine’s DEX port
- Power taps (the DEX harness often powers the telemetry device from the machine’s power supply)
- An output connector that connects to the telemetry device or handheld reader
DEX harnesses are manufacturer-specific in the sense that the power tap wiring and connector routing vary by machine brand, but the actual DEX data communication is standardized.
What You Need Before Installing
Verify Your Machine Has a DEX Port
Open the machine door and look for the DEX port — a 9-pin connector, often labeled “DEX,” “EVA-DTS,” or “EIA-485” on the machine’s control board or a pigtail wire coming from the controller area.
Most vending machines manufactured after 1995 have a DEX port. Some older machines may have DEX capability in their controller but no physical port connector installed — in this case, the port can sometimes be added by installing a header on the controller board.
Identify Your Telemetry Device
Common devices that connect via DEX:

- Nayax readers: Include DEX connection as part of the combined MDB/DEX harness

Obtain the Correct DEX Harness
DEX harnesses are available from:
- The telemetry device manufacturer (Cantaloupe includes one with their ePort readers)
- Vending parts suppliers
- Wiring harness manufacturers that specialize in vending (these can be found through NAMA member directories)
Most harnesses are machine-brand-specific because the power tap location and connector type varies. Common harness variants:

Installation: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Power Off the Machine
Unplug the machine before working inside.
Step 2: Locate the DEX Port
Open the machine door. Locate the DEX connector on the control board or the pigtail harness from the controller. It’s a 9-pin DE-9 female connector on the machine side, waiting for a DE-9 male connector from your harness.
If you can’t find the DEX port, check your machine’s service manual — the port location is documented there. On some machines (particularly older Crane/National models), the DEX port may be a small printed circuit board connector near the bill validator or on the controller board itself.
Step 3: Plan Your Harness Routing
Before connecting anything, plan how you’ll route the harness cable:
- From the DEX port to where the telemetry device will be mounted
- Avoid routing near moving parts, hot components (compressor, condenser), or pinch points
- Use cable ties to secure the harness
Step 4: Connect the DEX Harness to the Machine Port
Plug the DE-9 male connector on your harness into the machine’s DEX port. The connector is keyed — it only plugs in one way. Press firmly until seated.
If the connector has retention screws, tighten them (finger-tight is sufficient).
Step 5: Connect Power Taps (If Required)
Some DEX harnesses include power taps to provide 12V or 24V DC power to the telemetry device. These power taps have spade connectors or push-in connectors that attach to specific terminals on the machine’s power supply board or control board.
Typical power connection points:
- The machine’s power supply board usually has labeled +12V and GND (ground) terminals
- Alternatively, some harnesses tap power from the MDB bus, which carries power as well as data
Consult your harness documentation for the specific power connection instructions for your machine model.
Important: Connect the power tap only to the voltage specified in your harness documentation. Connecting a 12V device to 24V will damage it.
Step 6: Install and Connect the Telemetry Device
With the harness installed, connect it to your telemetry device:
- If using an ePort from Cantaloupe: connect the harness to the designated DEX/power port on the ePort reader
- If using a standalone DEX-to-cellular converter: connect the harness to the converter unit and mount the converter inside the machine cabinet
Mount the telemetry device per the manufacturer’s guidance:
- Away from the compressor and condenser (heat)
- Where the cellular antenna can get signal (if cellular — avoid putting the device entirely within a metal enclosure that blocks signal)
- Secure it so it won’t vibrate loose
Step 7: Restore Power and Initialize
Plug the machine back in. The telemetry device should power on and begin initialization. Initial setup typically involves:
- The device connecting to the cellular network
- Registering with your management platform
- Performing an initial DEX read to establish baseline data
For Cantaloupe ePort devices, this process is mostly automatic once the SIM is activated in your account. For other devices, follow the setup guide provided by the device manufacturer.
Step 8: Verify DEX Data in Your Management Platform
After 15–30 minutes, log into your management platform and verify:
- The machine appears as “online” or “connected”
- Initial sales and inventory data has populated
- The data appears plausible (column count numbers match how many products you stocked)
If data appears but is clearly wrong (e.g., showing 999 units in every column, or negative numbers), the DEX connection may have a communication issue — check the connector seating and verify the harness is rated for your machine’s DEX version.
DEX Harness for Manual Data Collection (Handheld)
If you’re using a handheld DEX device rather than a cellular telemetry unit:
- The harness installation is the same up to Step 6
- Instead of connecting to a fixed cellular device, you connect a handheld DEX reader to the port during each service visit
- The handheld pulls data from the machine’s DEX port in about 10–30 seconds
- You sync the handheld to your route management software when you return to base
This manual collection approach works well for routes up to 15–20 machines where real-time monitoring isn’t critical. For larger routes or those requiring real-time alerts, the cellular telemetry approach is preferable.
Troubleshooting DEX Installation Problems
Machine Shows Online But No Data
Possible causes:
- DEX connector not fully seated — disconnect and reconnect, ensuring full engagement
- Incompatible DEX version — older machines may use EVA-DTS DEX version 4.0 while newer devices expect version 5.0 or 6.0. Check compatibility.
- Machine controller doesn’t support DEX despite having a port — some machines have the port but the controller firmware doesn’t support DEX output
Fix: Verify DEX version compatibility between your machine and the device. Check the controller firmware version and compare to the device’s DEX version requirements.
Device Shows Offline or Disconnected
Possible causes:
- Power connection issue — device not receiving power from harness
- Cellular signal blocked — device in a metallic area with no signal
- SIM not activated in account
- Device failed
Fix: Verify power connection (check voltage at power tap terminals). Test cellular signal at the machine location. Verify SIM activation status in your platform account.
Data Appears Incorrect
Possible causes:
- Incorrect harness for this machine model
- Harness wired incorrectly
- Machine controller output differs from expected DEX format
Fix: Verify harness compatibility with both the machine model and the collection device. Contact the device manufacturer with your machine model for compatibility confirmation.
FAQ: DEX Harness Installation
Do I need to be inside the machine to access the DEX port? Yes. The DEX port is inside the machine cabinet on the control board or a wiring pigtail. You need to open the machine door to access it.
Can I install DEX on any vending machine? Only on machines with DEX-capable controllers. Most machines manufactured after 1995 have this capability, but it’s not universal. Check your machine’s specifications or service manual.
Does installing a DEX harness void my machine’s warranty? Typically no — DEX is a designed-in feature. However, if your machine is under a dealer warranty, confirm with the dealer that third-party device connections are acceptable.
What’s the difference between DEX version 4.0 and 5.0? DEX version 5.0 (also called EVA-DTS 5.01) adds additional data fields and improved error handling over version 4.0. Most modern telemetry devices support both. If your machine uses an older version 4.0 controller, verify your device is backward-compatible.
My machine has a DEX port but my management software doesn’t recognize it. What’s wrong?
